LifeSouth represents an institute in Alachua County that has adopted an important public health policy to create smoke-free environments. Such policies constitute one of the best evidence-based methods for achieving the goals of the tobacco-control movement.

Research reveals that smoke-free work space and public place policies can:

  • Protect the public’s health by preventing exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Increase the number of cessation attempts
  • Reduce smoking prevalence
  • Reduce continuing smokers consumption of cigarettes
  • Reduce the number of hospitalizations for heart attacks most notably among non-smokers

LifeSouth is one organization on a growing list of Alachua County businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to protecting the health of their employees and our community by making their campuses tobacco-free.
